Hericium erinaceus is a type of mushroom with valuable medical properties as it is rich in nutrients, minerals and vitamins. For a long time, Hericium erinaceus has been known as a highly nutritious food. Especially, Hericium erinaceus has many active biological agents which have very good effect for the prevention and treatment of stomach ulcers, stomach cancer, oesophagus cancer; improvement of memory among the elderly; reinforcement of the immune system; raising oxygen levels; preventing fatigue; and increasing blood circulation.
Over the past year, Hericium erinaceus has been studied for cultivation to produce pharmaceutical products which bring much benefit to humans. Scientists from the Department of Experiential Biology under the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry have recently developed a new dietary supplement from Hericium erinaceus, called Heriglucan. This is a result of series of research projects conducted by the Department of Experimental Biology headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Mai Huong over the past years about biological agents in edible and medical mushrooms. This dietary supplement contains groups of biological agents extracted from Hericium erinaceus according to the clean technology such as Hericenone and Erinacin, in which Erinacine H has nerve growth factor (NGF) and the main compound having immune reinforcement (1,3; 1,6- β-Glucan).
Heriglucan dietary supplements produced at the Department of Experiential Biology
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Mai Huong, vice director of the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry, Heriglucan dietary supplements can strengthen the immune system; improve memory; prevent Alzheimers; limit the effects of aging, beautify skin and hair; intensify health after surgery, prevent radioactivity; support the prevention and treatment of digestive system cancers, especially of the liver and stomach.
Hericium erinaceus is cultivated in the liquid solution environment at the Department of Experiential Biology
Dr. Huong also said that the department successfully studied the method of cultivating Hericium erinaceus in a liquid solution environment. By using suitable nutrition, Hericium erinaceus produced results of biological agents like those cultivated in the solid environment. Especially, cultivation time decreases from four to six weeks instead of eight weeks.
This success has made an important contribution to disease treatment and improvement of community health, as well as improving productivity in cultivating precious and rare pharmaceutical products to meet new demand. Heriglucan dietary supplements received a criteria recognition No SĐK:6348/2011/YT-CNTC from the Department of Food Hygiene and Security. The group of authors applied a registration form for intellectual property rights.
