Application of technology for preservation of dog semen and of artificial insemination for breeding and conservation in some of police-dog species

.

For a long time, dog is a close, intelligent and loyal to its owner and is tamed by people. Dog has special ability that other animals do not have: eyes can see through the darkness and nose can distinguish 19,000 different smells. There fore, nowadays, several dog breeds have been tamed into professional dogs to sever security and national defence.

In 1960, Vietnam has built a flock of professional dogs from cross-breeding and imported source. Now, there are five foreign dog germs (Berger, Cocker, Rottweiter, Bosco and Labrador). Three of them, including Berger, Cocker and Labrador are breeds which are easy to raise, high adaptive and easy to develop. In Vietnam, ten thousands of these dogs are cultivated in the Administration of Managing, Taming and Using Professional Dog under the Ministry of Public Security and D24 school of the Border Guard.

Breeds were spontaneously multiplied so these breeds are in danger of degeneration and mixed, losing inherent characters and abilities of professional dogs. Moreover, most of professional dog breeds are imported with the price from 5,000 USD to 8,000 USD. It is essential to have detailed measure to multiply these dog breeds.
Dr. Do Van Thu and his co-workers at the Institute of Biotechnology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology conduct a project on the application of technology for preservation of dog semen and of artificial insemination for breeding and conservation in some of police-dog species. The project aimed to complete the technology for preservation of dog semen and the technology of artificial insemination in professional dogs, preserve and develop several police-dogs with good quality.

Straw frozen dog semen preserved at -1960C

Scientists used semen of 29 Berger, Cocker, Labrador male dogs which have semen vitality of over 70% to experimentally produce dilute and frozen semen. The male dogs were raised from two to six years, weight from 25 to 50 kilo, and brought up according to breeding program of the the Administration of Managing, Taming and Using Professional Dogs under the Ministry of Public Security.

The process of artificial insemination using straw frozen semen

The project focus on studying semen of professional dogs, diluted process to preserve dog semen at cold temperature, the technology of frozen dog semen, and technical process of dog artificial insemination. Over the past two years, scientists have obtained remarkable results.

About science, the project has provided a protocol for preservation of diluted dog semens at 5oC. Fresh diluted spermatozoa after 72 hours of storage possess a motility ≥ 60% and could be use for insemination; Created a protocol for cryofreezing of sperms of some police-dog species. A total of 820 semen straw pellets were produced. While preserving in liquid nitrogen at -1960C, the quality of semens was relatively stable. After thawing, the motility of spermatozoa is from 35% to 50%; Set up a protocol for artifical insemination in dog using frozen semen conserved in liquid nitrogen at -1960C.

In addition, scientists also set up a protocol for artificial insemination in dogs using straw frozen semen, simple and stable diluted semen, which which obtained a high rate of success. The number of born dog of the same rank is similar to direct cross breeding and stable sex rate. The project helped scientists to systematically collect biological characteristics about semen and elements affecting sperm quality of several professional dog breeds (Berger, Cocker, Labrador) of the police. Then, male dogs with good sperm quality for breeding are selected.

About application, the project not only selects male dogs for breeding at the the Administration of Managing, Taming and Using Professional Dog under the Ministry of Public Security, but also applies the artificial insemination in dog using straw frozen semen and diluted semen to develop the dog herd and preserve several gens of the valuable canine.

The project opened new success with the method of artificial insemination using straw frozen semen of professional dogs in Vietnam, contributing to creating scientific data of semen of professional dogs and permitting the application of technique of artificial insemination in reality.
