Zanamivir influenza medicine from axit sialic

Zanamivir is an enzyme neuraminidase inhibitor medicine, used to treat and prevent influenza on human’s body. Now, scientists from the Institute of Chemistry under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology have conducted a research project on this active element.

Vietnam ranged 2nd for liver cancer cases in the world (China as the 1st one) with more than 10,000 new patients annually. Toward this kind of cancer, patients in Vietnam are usually younger than those in European or US and still at the working age (around 40 years old). This is in the dangerous list of diseases cause of its fast development and high mortal rate. Consequently, liver cancer is supposed to be the serious problem that affects to commune’s health as well as to economical and social development.

Every year, natural disasters such as storm, flood, drought, landslide, river erosion had cause great damage to life and property. The Huong river is the largest river in Thua Thien Hue province with length of 128 km and its area cover 2/3 of the province. It is particularly important role in the development of economy, the province's social . In recent years, the issue of the Huong riverside slide occurs more frequently and more serious each time, particularly from the Tuan confluence to Sinh confluence (the section of Huong river flows through Hue city). According to statistics in the period of (1999 – 2009), the Huong river bank of Thien Mu Pagoda are having the most serious erosion about an average of over 10m/year; section of river runs through Huong Long village (Long Ho Thuong, Xuoc Du, Bao Vinh, Tran Non) with an average speed erosion of 2-10m/year, landslides in some places of 10m deep into the coast and lasted nearly 1600m. Besides, due to global climate changes, as well as the impact of economic - social development in the basin, Huong riverside slide more and more, causing serious damage to economic- social development in the basin.

Research and treatment of air pollution by TiO2 nanomaterials

Nowadays, strong development and lack of pollutant control in many economic sectors have made environmental pollution more severe than ever before. Many industries such as consumer goods production and food process… have dismissed poisons that can damage human ecology and cause serious diseases for humans by their release into air, water resources. The development of nano technology, of which, typical material, nano TiO2 can help to clean the environment.

Technology to detoxicate herbicides/ dioxin infected soil by bioremediation

From 1999 to 2009, scientists from The Institute of Biotechnology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, researched several technologies to detoxicate dioxin infected soil by bioremediation at old military bases in the central city of Da Nang. The results show that in laboratories or pilot fields from 0.5 to 100 cubic metres, the pasteurization effectiveness reached from 40 to 100 pgTEQ per day.

Research, development, manufacture, and application of the fluorescent X-ray spectrometer in Vietnam

The fluorescent X-ray spectrometer is widely used in the world to analyze ultimate compositions qualitatively and quantitatively independent from their chemical link. A notable advantage of this spectrometer is quick analysis that does not damage models which can exist in many different states such as solid, liquids or gas. At the end of 1989, Doctor Le Quang Huy and his colleagues at the Institute of Materials Science were successful in researching and manufacturing the first fluorescent X-ray spectrometer in Vietnam. Upon this, scientists have continued to research and upgrading products and promoting application in many provinces and cities in Vietnam with positive results achieved.
