Research and utilization of biological products derived from microbial antagonists for controlling plant pathogenic fungi

Both Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn and Fusarium cause serious harm to productivity in many crops such as cereal crops (rice, maize, potatoes), vegetables (nuts, beans, tomatoes, cabbages, lettuces), fruit and industrial crops (cotton). These pathogenic fungi cause black root rot symptoms, ulcer roots, stem rot, rotting leaves.  Annually, fungal diseases damage about of 11.6% agricultural output.

Discovery of a new snake species from Kon Tum Plateau, Vietnam

 

A new species of snake was described from Chu Mom Ray National Park, Kon Tum Province. The new species, Opisthotropis cucae David, Pham, Nguyen & Ziegler, 2011, was named in honour of Mrs. Ho Thu Cuc (Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, IEBR), for having collected the holotype of this new species and especially for her long lasting contribution to the better understanding of the herpetology of Vietnam. A single specimen was collected during the field survey by the scientists of IEBR in central Vietnam.

Entomopathogenic fungi at Cat Tien National Garden: precious natural resource for biological applications

Entomopathogenic fungi which belong to a particular fungal group have been involved in research and application in traditional Chinese medicines, drugs and bioactive compound production and enzymes. . Many species of this fungal group have been widely used as biological control agents of insects pests. In Vietnam, there have been many research projects successfully using entomopathogenic fungi to prevent and kill insects and crop pests such as Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana. These two types were applied to prevent and kill house termites, insect pests on green cabbage, soybeans, green peas, aphis maydis and rice.

New species of treefrog discovered on Langbian Plateau, Lam Dong Province, Vietnam

 

A new species of treefrog was discovered by scientists from Australia, Vietnam and the USA. Description of the new species was published in the Zootaxa (No. 2727) in December, 2010. Field surveys were conducted from 2008 to 2010 in the Bi Dup – Nui Ba National Park, Lac Duong District, Lam Dong Province, by a team of researchers from the Australian Museum, the University of Science (National University of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City) and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The new species has an impressive name, Vampire Tree Frog Rhacophorus vampyrus Rowley, Le, Tran, Stuart & Hoang, 2010. It also has a special colour pattern: the dorsum is pale tan to brick red; the throat, chest, and belly are white; the flanks, the anterior and posterior parts of thight are black; the webbing between fingers and toes is grey to black. The new species has a snout-vent length from 39 to 53 mm, tips of fingers and toes with large disks, and a pointed skin projection at the tibiotarsal articulation.
