Implanting high-yield cow’s embryo in the Central Highlands – a new prospect trend

The Central Highlands province of Lam Dong has favourable conditions for the development of dairy cow breeding.

With the objective to build up the Holstein Friesian (HF) cow breed with high productivity and quality, scientists from the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) Institute for Scientific Research under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) carried out a project studying and applying the technology of implanting high-yield cow’s embryo in the Central Highlands in the framework of the Central Highlands 3 Programme led by Dr. Le Thi Chau. 

2013, successful year for VNREDSat-1 Project

VNREDSat-1 (Vietnam’s first Natural Resources, Environment and Disaster monitoring satellite) was launched into orbit from the space centre in Kourou, French Guiana, on May 7th, 2013. After entering stable orbit at the height of 680 kilometers, VNREDSat-1 has regularly captured and transmitted high quality images to the ground station in Vietnam, meeting the demand for remote sensing images of Vietnam. On September 4th 2013, the French partners handed over control of VNREDSat-1 to Vietnam for official operation and exploitation.

Phallus drewesii – a new fungus from Vietnam and Asia

Plant researchers from the Southern Institute of Ecology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology found Dreswe fungus (scientific name is Phallus drewesii Desjardin & B.A. Perry) in a moist evergreen forest in Yang Ly region, Bidoup – Nui Ba National Park, at the altitude of about 1,700 metres. This is the first time scientists recorded the presence of this species in Vietnam and Asia.

Discovery of a new lizard species from Ba Na – Nui Chua Nature Reserve in Da Nang province

A group of scientists from Institute of Tropical Biology under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Mr. Pham Hong Thai from Education Department of Cam Le District, Da Nang, Vietnam and Prof. L.Lee Grismer from La Sierra University, Prof. P.L. Wood Jr from Brigham Young University, USA has discovered a new lizard species named Hemiphyllodactylus banaensis sp. nov. Ngô, Grismer, Phạm & Wood Jr. 2014 from Ba Na – Nui Chua Nature Reserve in Da Nang province. The discovery was published in Zootaxa (No.3760) on February 2nd 2014. 

Discovery of a new plant species – Aristolochia quangbinhensis Do

A group of scientists from Vietnam National Museum of Nature under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Hanoi pharmaceutical University and Dresden Plant Institute – Germany, has discovered a new plant species named Aristolochia quangbinhensis Do. This species belongs to the Aristolochia subgenus Isotrema (Aristolochiaceae) branch. The discovery was published on Phytokeys 33(2014).
